Hillbilly friends

I have always been obsessed with Hillbillies and southern culture! Something about it is fascinating as well as disturbing and scary. I love the myths, the look, the architecture, and especially the music.

The drawings of the men and animals are a bit feeble but as you guys probably know, I'm not real comfortable drawing things besides girls. But if I'm gonna do a hillbilly project one day, I can't just draw girls! I have a million ideas that I want to do.
Maybe I'll post them soon and get your guys' opinions!

Other great hillbilly things that I love: Banjos, the Carter Family, murder ballads, the Blue Fugates of Kentucky, the word "Appalachia," coal miners, scary Jesus songs, fiddles, that weird kid from 'Deliverance', moonshine...the list goes on and on!

Good books and websites with stories and info on Appalachian culture are somewhat hard to find. Anyone know any good ones? This one is really cool: http://www.hillbillysavants.org/

Oh yeah, I have Rex Hackelberg to thank for these new doodles...I was looking at his site a lot that day and was super inspired to draw animals and funny weirdos. Thanks Rex! I had a momentary break from my awful rut!

I'd love to go on a tour of the Appalachian mountains someday, but I'm too chicken to really do it. Probably most of it is too modernized to be fun anymore, and if I go digging around in the woods I might get eaten by hillbilly cannibals or something.

P.S.

Speaking of hillbillies...Kali and I are planning on making our very own country/rock 'n roll CD soon! Kali is a really good guitar player, and we both love singing old songs so it'll be fun. Once in a while you gotta try doing new things instead of what yer used to!

Anyhow, some rough doodles I did of Kali and I singing in different country styles:

We will probably end up putting up songs online, if anyone would actually like to hear!
I'm sure Kali will say more on the matter at some point- she's the one who knows more about this stuff!

Gishies

Lillian and Dorothy Gish work doodle...super influenced by Shane Glines' Louise Brooks drawings and Jenny Lerew's lovely and smooth girl art.

Sorry about the lack of energetic and happy art here! I'm still in this godawful rut, and whenever I DO draw something decent I want to hide it away and save it for my book, if I ever finish making it.

A disturbing realization today! Lately I'm more comfortable drawing on the computer than on paper. I much prefer the idea of drawing on paper, and having something tangible to keep or give away, and having something you can color with marker or paint or whiteout or whatever. I gotta get some new inspiration! Nothing is working! (; _ :)

Oh! On a less gloomy note (at least for me), I got my bangs cut. I can see again! Hooray! They look like this:

Edie Sedgwick post-its

Ben Forbes suggested I give drawing Edie Sedgwick a try, so I did! Thanks Ben! These aren't great likenesses or anything, but they're post-it doodles so give me a break. :)

LA Renaissance Pleasure Faire

These drawings are old!! The Ren Faire was months ago! I needed something to blog about...I'm still saving a lot of drawings to put in my book, so it's hard to choose what to save and what to post.

Anyhow, some Ren Faire memories:

Snoopy boob theory.

I was a big Renaissance nerd in highschool. Going to the faire last year reminded me and made me want to run off with all the people in costume! I heard some crazy stories about these people though...

A new trend is to go to the faire dressed like forestfolk and walk funny! I call them the Faire Funny Walkers!

They sure do walk funny!

Well...errrrrrrr...

That's it! Sorry my posts are sporadic as of late! Please don't abandon me!

OH YEAH

Sorry to plug myself (again), but if you haven't taken a look already, I've got stuff for sale on eBay! Click the picture to see!

3 days left! \(^o^)/

Happy Birthday Sandra!

Today is Sandra's birthday! Sandra is my good pal, a super cute designer, and also my boss at Nickelodeon! She and her husband Jorge created "El Tigre" together. She doesn't have a blog (sadly), so leave some birthday happy for her here!

Gift for Brandy

My post today is about my friend Brandy! Brandy is an all-around awesome person. I'll teach you:

BRANDY IS STYLISH AND FRIENDLY!

BRANDY IS MULTI TALENTED AND CREATIVE!

BRANDY IS GENEROUS!

BRANDY IS BRAVE AND TRUE!

I'm sorry to tell you however that I won't be giving out Brandy's number to anyone today...she's taken! In fact, she's ENGAGED, to super-cartoonist Eddie Trigueros!
Brandy's been a real pal to me, and I want to help her out for her wedding! She and her lucky fiance are paying for it all by themselves, so I'm going to start a fund to help out!

Soon these drawings will be on eBay, so bid on them and help this excellent lady have an amazing wedding! I'll do a post when these go up for sale!

Work is hectic right now, but if I can manage it I'll put some new never-before-seen art on eBay as well, taking people's suggestions from earlier in mind. Thanks guys! :)

Oh yeah, here's some extra Brandy treats- photos of us having fun, and more fanart.

Yay!! 2008 is gonna be awesome! Right? Right???

OK, now to post all the photos from my Christmas Tahoe vacation that I meant to post earlier!

Ugh, I can't believe I actually lived here. I miss it! I miss actual seasons!!

Snow on the beach! So cool! I remember coming to this beach to eat sandwiches with pals instead of going to school.

Nice wintery colors!

I saw this cool shack on the way home. It's tradition for my dad to make the 8 hour driving trip to come pick me up, bring me up, then bring me back down again. It's fun though, cause we get to sing Christmas carols all the way. The rest of these photos were taken on the drive down. I missed a bunch of great 60's motels and stuff when I fell asleep for about an hour. Damn!

More awesome shack action! The only thing that's too bad is that my camera failed to capture some of the beautiful colors of the mountains and shrubs. The bushes were amazing shades of turquoise and maroon and lavender, and the mountains went from blue to grey to green to even mustardy browns.

When I saw this sign, we had to stop to investigate! What an awesome restaurant name!
EAT!
The building was abandoned and super run down, but someone was obviously there because we also found...
PUPPIES!!! YESSSSS!!!

Here's about when we got into LA...the last pretty thing I will see for a while!

Extra bonus- I got into some mischief while in Nevada...I posted some highschool idiocy on my other blog, so click HERE to see, or click the photos!

Hey, I hope you guys had a great 2007, and that 2008 will be even better! Thanks to those who still check my blog, even though I've been bad about posting lately! More on the way soon!
